Island in the mist

We can confirm that the foghorn works. It has been on the past two nights. Luckily, I still find the sound soothing. Sometimes we haven’t seen past our shore. When it’s not foggy, it’s windy. It’s hard to have both at the same time.

We’ve been enjoying family visits. Chelsea was here and we chilled on the island and Cooper and Elizabeth were just here and showed us the town. We toured Salem a bit and made it to the Sam Adams brewery. Maybe it wasn’t foggy after all.

We need a traffic cop not a lighthouse

The coal tanker left Salem Sound this morning. I got to watch it head to the harbor entrance and let the pilot off. He walks down the ladder that is at an angle and then climbs down a vertical ladder to the waiting boat while they are both traveling at about 5-10 knots. Nice maneuver. The Harbormaster hovers nearby in the event of a mishap.

A quick trip to the homestead

Tim and I drove to the Adirondacks yesterday to check on the house.  I’m happy to report there is no drought and the flowers and weeds are growing like weeds.  We haven’t been there for a summer yet so I was happy to see these flowers in the bed near the hot tub.  We did some preventative maintenance but things were in good order.  We slept on the futon on the screened porch.  I heard coyotes and saw the sun rise over Otis Mountain.  Very nice.  Plus it was really nice to sleep under the quilt I made this spring.

We were happy to be home and then happy to be back on the island.

The air is dry and crisp and the wind has been gusty all day.  I should have done laundry.  Tim was working on the roof and the ladder blew down.  Talk about power.  I could have entitled this, Tim’s on the roof and I can’t get him down.

Geek squad let me down.  I got my camera back but it still doesn’t work. Another blog from the phone.

It has been a fairly dry summer and the rasperries are delicious.  We pick and eat them on the way to the beach.  I made a raspberry-apple crisp and brown betty.  Yum.

There were engineers here last week with free time and they had an edible plant book.  They were picking sumac tops for a lemonade like drink.  I made some yesterday.  It was pretty good and I am here to talk about it.

It feels like a bonus when the island gives back.

We aided the Aids to Navigation

We were in a quandary.  It was foggy and silent.  The fog horn wasn’t working. At the risk of having the horn blow all the time, we did the right thing  We contacted the Coast Guard and they walked us through resetting it.  Then the fog lifted.  The photo is the fog detector with authorized personnel nearby.  All is quiet for now.
